The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a compact crossover that provides Gilroy area Mazda drivers with many features and amenities they’d expect to find in a luxury model, with a surprisingly affordable price tag. While you’ll experience a premium look and feel on the inside and elegant styling on the outside, when you step inside the CX-5, you’ll find this SUV drives as well as it looks, with class-leading handling and a ride that will reacquaint you with the joy of driving.
According to the Mazda dealer near Gilroy, the most significant change for 2022 is the addition of standard all-wheel drive on all trim levels. New drive modes make the ride even more adaptable. There are some exterior style updates, too. The grille gets a new three-dimensional mesh texture. The front and rear have smoother surfaces, and the headlights get updated styling. The 2022 CX-5’s suspension gets an upgrade that improves the ride and handling, and the seats have been updated to add even more support. At the top of the lineup, the Turbo Signature trim gets body-color cladding instead of the outgoing model’s darker hue.
The Mazda CX-5 remains one of the automotive media’s favorite mainstream SUVs. Car and Driver writes:
“You don’t need to drive the CX-5 hard to enjoy it or to appreciate its excellence. Sure, its precise steering and composed cornering make for one helluva Sunday cruise. But it also soaks up rough roads without commotion and has the ride quality of crossovers that cost twice as much. This harmonious interplay of dynamics is unrivaled by its competitors. Pavement imperfections are isolated, road noise is minimal, and the damping is neither stiff nor floaty.”
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 seats five passengers and comes in five trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Turbo, and Turbo Signature. Powering the CX-5 is a standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of twist, joined to a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Turbo and Turbo Signature are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that generates 227 hp and 210 lb-ft. This unit is also connected to the six-speed automatic. EPA-estimated fuel economy is rated at up to 24 mpg city/30 mpg highway.*
The base 2022 CX-5 Sport trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, automatic on/off LED headlights, cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and rain-sensing wipers. The infotainment system includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice recognition, Bluetooth and two USB ports. Also standard is lane-keeping assistance, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection and automatic high beams.
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 has yet to be tested by the IIHS as of this writing. However, the outgoing model received the organization’s highest designation of Top Safety Pick+, with the best marks of Good in all collision tests. We expect to see identical ratings for the 2022 model.
