The 2022 Mazda MX-30 is the automaker’s first all-electric vehicle. This SUV impresses Gilroy area Mazda drivers with its forward-thinking exterior styling and clean-looking interior. The MX-30 features a stylish design reminiscent of a coupe. It’s about the same size as the Mazda CX-30 it’s based on. It carries the same MX classification as the Mazda MX-5 Miata, hinting that the MX-30 provides composed handling and the same exceptional driving experience. The MX-30 represents the first phase of Mazda’s multi-solution electrification strategy, which means we can expect to see more great things from the Japanese automaker. At first, the MX-30 will only be available in California, with other markets planned to roll out in 2022.
The MX-30 seats five passengers and is available in two trim levels: MX-30 EV and Premium Plus. The 2022 MX-30 is equipped with an 80.9-kW electric motor that generates 143 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. The engine is powered by a 35.5-kWh battery pack with a range of about 100 miles on a full charge. Both models get front-wheel drive. According to the Mazda dealer near Gilroy, owners can charge the battery using standard AC power as well as quick DC chargers. EPA-estimated fuel economy is rated at 98 MPGe city/85 MPGe highway.*
Motor Trend tested the 2022 MX-30 and came away impressed, writing:
“[It] seems Mazda still goes ‘hmmmm’ in 2021, with nothing but the familiar gentle thrum of the front-mounted motor and the soft tones of the acoustic overlay that seems piped in on every modern electric car. The MX-30 drives like a Mazda, too: It steers, stops, and slaloms with poise uncharacteristic of its designated segment.”
Step inside the 2022 Mazda MX-30, and you’ll be enthralled by the handsome cabin that utilizes sustainable materials such as cork harvested from fallen trees. If that seems unusual, consider that Mazda was founded in 1921 as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, a cork manufacturing company. The fabric used in the seating is produced from recycled plastic bottles.
