What You Need To Know About the HAZUMI Concept

140305a

Designing a great car is not merely putting aesthetic pieces together but creating a functional piece of moving art. Every minute detail should be kept in mind while designing these roadsters. The designers and modelers at Mazda are artists, not engineers. They had to capture the essence of “KODO – Soul of Motion” and applied it to a new small car. Thus emerged the HAZUMI concept car.

HAZUMI is a word in Japanese that means “spring up” or “to bound”. This nomenclature was used to project the car as a small vigorous animal, full of energy. The team of designers was led by Ryo Yanagisawa who wanted to enhance the notion of a car from a mode of transport to an art form. The man responsible for modeling the concept was expert sculptor Yutaka Sukegawa. He was entrusted the task of creating shapes to bring the spirit of KODO alive.

When you look at the HAZUMI model, you are reminded of an athlete’s crouch. Since it is a small car, it captures a sense of tension on the frames and surfaces. Therefore, applying shapes to HAZUMI’s compact dimensions became a challenge. The muscularity of an athlete’s body is reflected in the car’s lean form. Adding to this is the unique surface quality of forged metals that give the car a sense of depth and dimension.

The HAZUMI concept car does not bow to conventional norms and encapsulates the same engineering features as its larger counterparts. It solidifies the notion that the KODO design can be universally applied to vehicles of any size without losing an ounce of impact.

The Story behind Soul Red

design_05_master_painter.ts.1603310135327230

Innovations in the field of color for a car’s paint job may sound pretty over-the-top, but Mazda does not think so. Creating a color that represents the car manufacturer’s zeal is one of the reasons that led to the birth of Soul Red.

When applying the color to a mass production, quality levels have to be maintained. To do so, limited materials are used during the concept stage and the intensity and depth of the color are recreated. This is done by taking production processes into consideration. After fine-tuning a number of color mixes and screening these samples thoroughly, the Soul Red Premium Metallic color came to be. It has since been used on models such as the CX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3, and Mazda2.

Theoretically, it is possible to create a color that radiates translucence and depth by directly painting it on to polished metal. Practically, however, an intermediate, anti-corrosive coating is necessary for mass produced cars. Mazda achieved this by using a layer of silver paint as the intermediate base coat between the metal and the soul red paint. Silver paint was used because its composition is similar to metal and is, hence, more practical to use on the body.

The color that Mazda calls its ultimate red was the result of a plethora of ideas and inspirations by various engineers, designers, paint makers, and researchers. It isn’t a concept that was created out of a mere trial and error process. Soul Red is a color that captures not only Mazda’s expression of beauty but also the experience and passion exuded by a team of inspirational engineers.

Mazda Makes A Few Recommendations on Driving Positions and Foot Placement

measureing_driving_position.ts.1602150246032970

Driving should not just be safe; it should also be fun and enjoyable. Taking into account the safety and fun aspects of driving Mazda has created a driving environment that connects the driver and the car. The accelerator, driving pedal, and steering wheel are positioned in a way that feels natural. Every model is designed to ensure the driving philosophy, “Jinba Ittai”, defined as “the horse and rider becoming one”, is followed.

It is easier for the car to adapt to the driver’s position than the other way round. If the driver adjusts to the car’s positions it puts a lot of stress on the body. This stress then increases the chances of making mistakes while driving. Following these simple rules will make your driving experience a pleasure like no other.

  1. Seating position: By creating an ideal driving position, unnecessary tension is avoided leading to better reflexes. This can be done by resting your back against the seat such that you are deeply and comfortably seated.
  2. Line of sight: A clear, comfortable line of sight allows the driver to focus on the road and change it depending on the circumstances. Irrespective of the height and weight, you can find a position that makes driving easy and keeps your eye-point within the Eye-line Zone.
  3. Foot placement: Mazda has placed vehicle-control devices in locations that make driving simple. Place your left foot on the foot rest and the right heel on a space between the accelerator and the brake pedal. The ball of your right foot should touch the accelerator pedal, finishing off the perfect driving position.
