Understanding How Your Vehicle’s Air-Conditioning System Works

The purpose of your vehicle’s air-conditioning system is to remove the hot air from inside the vehicle and keep cold air blowing to bring down the cabin’s temperature. Main components of a vehicle’s air-conditioning system include the compressor, condenser, evaporator, metering device and hoses.  Of course, to make the system work, it must have R-134A refrigerant.  This refrigerant is a chemical compound that replaced Freon, which you may recall was considered harmful to the ozone layer.  As the compressor spins, it pressurizes the refrigerant which in turn produces cold air. The compressor works hard, and the faster it spins, the colder the air.

 

Why Your Vehicle’s Air-Conditioning System May Need Servicing

The first thing that our Service technician will check for is the amount of pressure in your vehicle’s air-conditioning system.  If it’s low, they’ll add more refrigerant to recharge the air-conditioning system.  After adding more refrigerant, the pressure will be checked again.  If it’s still low, it may indicate that there is a leak in the air-conditioning system, or that your vehicle’s compressor is failing. Our Service technicians can properly diagnose and solve either of these problems.  Keep in mind there are other possible causes for your vehicle’s air-conditioning system to underperform, such as a rock or other debris hitting and damaging the condenser.
