Mazda Design: The Role Of A Fabricator-1

design_04_expert_fabricator_01.ts.1603310135325670

Koji Fujii, the expert fabricator at Mazda strives endlessly to create life-size models as per the designs he receives from the designers’ team. He indulges in repeated fine tuning of his models by carving and polishing them until he reaches perfection.

Fujii is required to create a realistic model of the design that he receives from the combined work of designers, clay modelers and digital modelers. He makes use of a variety of materials like resin, wood and metal to fabricate a 3D ‘hard model’ that is equivalent in quality to the actual production vehicle.

A hard model is developed to make final checks in the design and give it a final sign-off. A fabricator needs to ensure that the hard model is an exact replica of the real model. For this, he needs to practice a lot of precision and pay attention to the tiniest of details. Right from the instrument panel quality to the shape of the door knobs and the transparency level of the lamps, every single part of the model has to be accurately reproduced.

Although Fujii receives the blueprints from the designers, he is open to making revisions at the hard model stage in a bid for perfection in innovation. He embraces learning as a continuous process and visits master craftsmen to imbibe new techniques of playing with materials.

As an expert fabricator, Fujii works in collaboration with the design team at Mazda to produce the product’s final design.

Mazda: How Clay Brings A Car To Life

design_05_v2.ts.1603310135339700

At Mazda, the designers start out with a pencil and paper to sketch sculptures, taking cues from the different forms of nature for example, a cheetah in motion. These sketches are then remodeled into life-size 3D objects using automotive clay, by skilled clay modelers. This is when a simple idea takes a realistic form and gains a distinct identity.

Clay modelers at Mazda persevere to fine-tune the model surfaces by repeated finishing with aluminum, to eliminate any flaws or imperfections. Through this process, the design moves closer to reality. Artists work tirelessly with their hands to create sculptures that seem to exude a humane soulfulness. With slight changes in the models, the artists are able to intuitively create a form that appeals to the human heart. It is this sensuous beauty of human touch that is impossible to recreate through digital technology.

The clay modelers at Mazda work in collaboration with the digital modelers who use technology to create 3d models. The models created through clay can be checked for imperfections by using computer software. Inversely, the designs created by digital technology can be further enhanced through clay modeling. The harmony between the exquisite craftsmanship of the clay modelers and the technical advancements of digital technology creates a fascinating design in a tangible form. The humane touch provided by the handiwork of skilled clay modelers produces a design that has a heart and soul and seems to breathe like a live cheetah.

Only Bio-Based Plastics Are Used For Mazda Cars

shutterstock_171985811

Mazda’s involvement in the development of biomass technologies goes way back. As “Mazda Biotechmaterial”, they created the industry’s first heat-resistant high-strength bioplastic for the interiors of vehicles. A biofabric made from plant derivatives for vehicle seat upholstery was also developed by them. However, when you are designing the exterior of a car, the plastics used should possess a high-quality finish and should resist extreme weather, scratch, and impact conditions.

To overcome technical challenges, Mazda has joined forces with Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation to decrease their environmental impact by helping create bio-based engineering plastic. Bio-based engineering plastic is plastic made from materials which are derived from plants. By using these plastics, you minimize petroleum resource usage and reduce CO2 emissions. The derived material can be dyed easily thus reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) during the painting process. The finish of parts made from the bioplastic is of a higher quality which features a smooth, mirror-like veneer making it suitable for vehicle exteriors.

Mazda has made a material which can be used for both the exterior and interiors. The plastic is highly moldable and durable which makes it ideal for making any car part. By optimizing the composition and molding specifications and mixing in additives and coloring agents, they are able to develop plastic parts which have a superior finish.

You can find bioplastic used in the all-new Mazda MX-5 which saw a global launch in 2015. The durability of the material has ensured its use in future production models.

Mazda’s Environment Friendly Policy

Beauty of World

Moving towards sustainable energy Mazda, in 2007, envisioned and announced their “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” plan aimed to make cars which were functional, fun, and fuel efficient. Thus, contribute to environmental health. According to the plan, by 2015 Mazda would improve the average fuel economy in its vehicles by 30 percent.

Mazda, in addition to improving performance delivered by the engine, body, transmission, chassis, as well as other vehicle parts, is making significant changes to the vehicles. They plan to reduce the weight of the cars while increasing thermal efficiency of the engine. By adopting a Building Block Strategy which includes breakthrough electric devices like brake energy regeneration system, hybrid, and other systems Mazda intends to reduce CO2 emissions. They also believe the vehicle itself need not be strictly dedicated to the welfare of the environment. A combination of environmental and safety performance and driving pleasure can be developed.

The foundation of their strategy depends on improvements in internal combustion engines. A significant percentage of automobile powertrains will still run by internal combustion engines even if performance components are electrically powered. The solution would be to gradually include electric device technologies to base engines.

Their 4-step Building Block Strategy consists of,

  1. Improved base technologies
  2. Battery management technology
  3. Brake energy regeneration system
  4. Electric drive technology (hybrid system)

With these developments, Mazda wants to create vehicles that excite and invite one to drive them. They must also be fun to drive, so that they make the driver want to sit behind the wheel again.

Mazda’s Idling Stop Tech

technology_env_i-stop_1st-row_img_2.ts.1602150248461100

Normally, when your car is in idle mode fuel is still being used by the engine. To prevent the loss of fuel, you have idling stop systems which shut down the car’s engine when the car is static and restart when it is in motion.

Mazda’s spin on the idling stop system is its “i-stop” which improves fuel economy without compromising on the driving experience. Their control technologies restart the engine rapidly giving you a smooth operational feel. There is a slight difference in the operation of the i-stop technology for gasoline and diesel engines.

i-stop in gasoline engines

In a gasoline engine, Mazda’s i-stop restarts through combustion. When the engine stops, fuel is injected directly into a cylinder and ignited. This causes the engine to ignite quickly and quietly causing a significant amount of fuel saving. The precision and position of the pistons is controlled by the i-stop system which enables fuel ignition and engine restart. The restart takes approximately 0.35 seconds.

i-stop in diesel engines

Gasoline engines work on combustion, whereas diesel engines work on compression of the fuel-air mixture. Diesel engine idling systems need two engine cycles to restart. The i-stop uses only one cycle to do so. This can be done due to its precise control of the position of its pistons. As a result of this precision, the i-stop has the fastest diesel engine restart speed of approximately 0.40 seconds. Noise and vibrations during restart are so minimal they are barely noticeable.

This Miata Has Clocked in Over 900,000 Miles!

2016-Mazda-MX-5-Miata_4_lg

More than 20 years ago, Yuichi Tsuyuki became the owner of a brand new MX-5. Today, he still owns the car and is proud to say he has clocked up 930,811 kilometers (578,379 miles) on the odometer. This distance is equal to a journey to and from the moon. He is a part of the Roadster Club of Japan, with his driving endeavors being featured in their quarterly magazine.

He never once would have thought of keeping the car this long let alone driving it around this much. For two years, between 2007 and 2009, Tsuyuki drove NC, a third-gen model. Despite the switch, he was known as the guy who drove the first-gen NA6, a model known for its high mileage. The beckoning by his first love was hard to resist and he switched back to the original on its 20th anniversary.

The reason he believes makes the Mazda stand out is because of its original suspension and ground clearance. Helping his case is the MAZDASPEED semi-bucket seat on the driver’s side and a second-gen NB glass window soft top.

From 1993 to 2016, he has traveled a distance that is more than twice around the world, driving every kilometer himself. A few more years and he would probably set a record with it. He says he will retire the car once he hits the coveted 1,000,000 kilometers (620,000 miles) mark. But seeing his admiration for the car and love for driving you can safely conclude the retirement is not going to happen even if it crosses the milestone. To know more walk into Cardinale Mazda.

Mazda Story: Read about One Girl’s Dream Finally Come True

Mazda 2

Opening Kristen Holliday’s journal, you might think it would be filled with anecdotes about clothes, ponies, or boys, but she wasn’t the typical girl who would dream about such things. When her friends were out doing something conventional and “girly” such as shopping, she would be working on her car. Her fairytales do not include Prince Charming but a gorgeous automobile. Kristen Holliday is the perfect example to prove girls can be passionate about cars just like boys.

Her fervor for the Miata began at an early age. When she was about 9 years old, her father showed her a red Miata MX-5 during one of their drives. He told the young Kristin that it would be the car that she would fall in love with. And voila! She did. Never had she witnessed such a stunning piece of craftsmanship and was completely smitten by it. Her thoughts and diary entries were chocked full of Miatas from then on. No sooner had she passed the driving test than she rushed to her friend’s house; not to celebrate, but learn how to change the oil in a car from her friend’s brother.

Kristen’s dream became a reality when her husband, Andrew, surprised her with a 1991 model MX-5 during her time at university. Over the years, she and her husband have traveled far and wide in their Miata. They even attended the all-new MX-5 launch in California on their roadster. The couple’s love for the outdoors includes camping and the MX-5 has been with them through all their adventures. To know more walk in to Cardinale Mazda.

There Are Only 10 Mazda 818s Left on the Planet!

Mazda 818

Most teenagers cannot wait to get behind the wheel of their parents’ car the moment they pass their driving test. They may also be gifted one, usually a hand-me-down, from a relative looking to get the car off their hands. Stefen Neuteboom, as a typical teen, though was sure his first car would be a Mazda and he would buy it.

At 16, Stefen Neuteboom was working at a local Mazda dealership when he heard a conversation which put his motor dreams into overdrive. The owner of an ultra-rare Mazda 818 was thinking of selling it. The 818, which was bought in 1973, was not put to use in over a decade. He decided to have a look and then, maybe buy it. When the engine growled to power, he knew he had found “the one”. He cleaned the engine and repainted the car to befit its former glory.

This was in 2009 when he wasn’t of the legal age to drive. Today, he’s the envy of a lot of Mazda and automobile enthusiasts. A car salesman by profession, Neuteboom has put his Mazda 818 on display at the car dealership he works in, not surprisingly a Mazda.

Currently, he is one of the few who can boast of owning a classic Mazda 818 because there are only 10 of them left in the Netherlands, possibly in the world. If you are thinking about buying his car, keep thinking! He does not plan on giving up his roadster yet or maybe ever. To know more walk in to Cardinale Mazda.

What You Need To Know About the HAZUMI Concept

140305a

Designing a great car is not merely putting aesthetic pieces together but creating a functional piece of moving art. Every minute detail should be kept in mind while designing these roadsters. The designers and modelers at Mazda are artists, not engineers. They had to capture the essence of “KODO – Soul of Motion” and applied it to a new small car. Thus emerged the HAZUMI concept car.

HAZUMI is a word in Japanese that means “spring up” or “to bound”. This nomenclature was used to project the car as a small vigorous animal, full of energy. The team of designers was led by Ryo Yanagisawa who wanted to enhance the notion of a car from a mode of transport to an art form. The man responsible for modeling the concept was expert sculptor Yutaka Sukegawa. He was entrusted the task of creating shapes to bring the spirit of KODO alive.

When you look at the HAZUMI model, you are reminded of an athlete’s crouch. Since it is a small car, it captures a sense of tension on the frames and surfaces. Therefore, applying shapes to HAZUMI’s compact dimensions became a challenge. The muscularity of an athlete’s body is reflected in the car’s lean form. Adding to this is the unique surface quality of forged metals that give the car a sense of depth and dimension.

The HAZUMI concept car does not bow to conventional norms and encapsulates the same engineering features as its larger counterparts. It solidifies the notion that the KODO design can be universally applied to vehicles of any size without losing an ounce of impact.
