At a time when other automakers are pulling back on their plans for diesel-powered vehicles, Mazda is surging ahead with their diesel engine for the 2018 Mazda CX-5.  According to Automotive News, Masahiro Moro, the President and CEO for Mazda North American Operations, Mazda’s intent is to sell diesel models of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 comprising 10% of all U.S. CX-5 sales.

Diesel Engine Only Available In Grand Touring Trim

Initially, the diesel version of the 2018 Mazda CX-5 crossover SUV will only be available in the Grand Touring Trim.  Depending on how well sales are trending after the launch of the diesel-powered model of the CX-5, Mazda may elect to expand the diesel engine into other trims of the CX-5, as well as other models in its lineup.  It’s interesting to note that the diesel version of the Mazda CX-5 has already been made available in foreign markets with positive results.

Mazda is likely hedging their bets on a diesel-powered Mazda CX-5 due to the popularity of the sporty crossover SUV.  Currently, it is the most popular selling Mazda vehicle.  The 2017 second generation has just been released and demand is high. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 will be outfitted with a 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine, currently undergoing emissions testing by the EPA.  Diesel is an alternative option for consumers who appreciate improved fuel economy.
