Mazda Once Considered Building an Electric Miata

At one point in history, Mazda was considering building an electric Miata prototype. In 1991, Mazda built their first electric roadster – the electric Miata stayed in prototype stage permanently and never made it to production. The EV Miata had 16 batteries under the hood that sent power to a 30 kW motor, which translate to about 40 horsepower. As far as the transmission, the electric roadster featured a five speed transmission which gave it the zoom-zoom feeling all Mazda enthusiasts are well aware of. Although Mazda has not hinted at bringing the model back, we can imagine that an idea like this is not far fetch with the current trend of environmentally friendly vehicles.
