Cardinale Mazda in Salinas located at the Salinas Auto Mall, has watched with interest the ongoing debate concerning EVs (electric vehicles). We’re hearing more and more about automakers that are embracing the EV concept. Many are pouring their investment dollars into research and development in the quest for the next generation’s ideal EV. However, you won’t likely find this type of unbridled enthusiasm for EVs at Mazda headquarters.
Why Mazda Is Hedging Their Bets On Combustion Engines
According to Green Car Reports, the viewpoint of Mazda’s North American Senior Vice President Robert Davis is that the future of EVs is doomed if the subsidies currently in place go away. His theory is if the federal tax credit ($7,500) applied to the purchase of an EV is withdrawn, sales will ultimately dwindle. Further, he dismisses the notion that gas and diesel engines are on their way out. Mazda continues to put their research and development efforts into their Skyactiv engines. Next year, the automaker will be coming out with a combustion engine, which Davis feels holds real promise for the future. Mazda’s position is that the combustion engine will provide gasoline engines with “…the efficiency of the best diesels.” Currently, Mazda vehicles are among the cleanest cars in emissions testing. While it’s expected that Mazda will eventually get onboard with EVs, there’s certainly nothing wrong with Mazda continuing to find new ways to improve their Skyactiv engines.
