How To Protect Your Vehicle From Theft

It can happen to you or me. In the daylight or during cover of darkness, your vehicle can be targeted for theft. Sometimes stolen vehicles are recovered unscathed — but most are never recovered.  You can do your part to prevent being a victim of car theft by following these simple suggestions:

  1. Always lock your vehicle and roll up its windows. This just makes it harder for the thief to get behind the wheel of your vehicle.

  1. Park in a well-lit area at night. Avoid darkened alleys or deserted parking lots. Try to park where there are street lamps or where there’s a visible security camera.

  1. If you must park in a bad neighborhood, your vehicle should be equipped with a motion sensor alarm. A loud car alarm is an effective deterrent.

  1. Don’t leave your car running and unattended.

  1. Don’t leave your car unlocked with the keys under the mat, in the glove box or under the seat. Thieves know all the right places to look, including that spare key holder that’s magnetized and hidden on the underside of your vehicle.

  1. Do not leave valuables in plain sight in your vehicle. Even with the vehicle locked, thieves may not be able to resist the temptation and “smash and grab” your valuables. Once entry is made, what’s to stop them from hot-wiring your hot wheels?

  1. For extra peace of mind, consider installation of a GPS-tracking vehicle recovery device.

Keep information pertaining to your vehicle on your Smartphone.  Include the make, year and model as well as the VIN (vehicle identification number).  If you have to file a police report, you’ll have all this information readily available.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that car thieves are only interested in expensive luxury vehicles.  Most of the vehicles stolen are taken to a “chop shop” where they are disassembled and sold for their parts.  The more common and popular the vehicle, the more desirable it is for car thieves.
