Innovations in the field of color for a car’s paint job may sound pretty over-the-top, but Mazda does not think so. Creating a color that represents the car manufacturer’s zeal is one of the reasons that led to the birth of Soul Red.
When applying the color to a mass production, quality levels have to be maintained. To do so, limited materials are used during the concept stage and the intensity and depth of the color are recreated. This is done by taking production processes into consideration. After fine-tuning a number of color mixes and screening these samples thoroughly, the Soul Red Premium Metallic color came to be. It has since been used on models such as the CX-5, Mazda6, Mazda3, and Mazda2.
Theoretically, it is possible to create a color that radiates translucence and depth by directly painting it on to polished metal. Practically, however, an intermediate, anti-corrosive coating is necessary for mass produced cars. Mazda achieved this by using a layer of silver paint as the intermediate base coat between the metal and the soul red paint. Silver paint was used because its composition is similar to metal and is, hence, more practical to use on the body.
The color that Mazda calls its ultimate red was the result of a plethora of ideas and inspirations by various engineers, designers, paint makers, and researchers. It isn’t a concept that was created out of a mere trial and error process. Soul Red is a color that captures not only Mazda’s expression of beauty but also the experience and passion exuded by a team of inspirational engineers.
