Celebrating Mazda’s First Wankel Rotary Engine
According to Inside Mazda, the event will showcase vintage Japanese vehicles and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking first Mazda sports car, the Cosmo Sport 110S. Featuring the Wankel rotary engine, this vehicle paved the way for Mazda technological advances and Mazda experienced great success with its rotary engines. Globally, Mazda sold more than one million vehicles equipped with the rotary engine. Even today, many are still enthralled with the rotary engine technology and Mazda may be working on future designs to feature a rotary engine again.
“Touge” in Japanese means “Mountain Pass” and the road rally on July 15 will wind through Southern California’s mountainous roads leading back to Irvine. There will be many vintage Japanese vehicles, including some from Mazda’s Heritage Collection. We’re excited about this tribute to Mazda’s vehicles of years past being recognized for their contributions to technology in the automotive industry.
