Topping Up Engine Oil in a Mazda MX-5

 Oil Change

You should check the Mazda MX-5’s oil level when your car is safely parked on a level or flat surface. Do check the car oil when it is cold at the beginning of the day. At this time, the oil will be thicker and it will stick better to the dipstick. Pull out the dipstick, check it and then re-insert it slowly. Check it again. Avoid putting in the stick too quickly as this action may result in a false upper oil level reading.

In case you are driving the MX-5 for an extended period of time, and your car engine has become hot, fill the tank with fuel and park the vehicle. Switch off the engine. Wait for about 15 minutes to allow the oil to settle to the sump. Check repeatedly. Insert the dipstick slowly for a second check. If bright sunlight prevents you from seeing the level of oil on stick, hold the stick end against a few white tissues as this will highlight the position of oil at the dipstick end.

There must be light oil film on the dipstick at all times, including when the weather outside is hot. If the film is not there, then the oil level must be low. There could be another implication: you may have not inserted the dipstick properly.

Do remember not to overfill the Mazda MX-5 tank while topping up. This car’s engine must take a maximum of 0.75L to start from the Low to the High on the dipstick. Visit the Cardinale Mazda for comprehensive and best advice.
