Making out the differences between various trim levels, package options and other ways cars can be customized gets confusing after a while. With each and every company adding more random letters like i or S or XL after the base car’s name, figuring out exactly what comes standard on each model and comparing cars is harder than ever. Fortunately, Mazda is trying to simplify that, and the brand new 2017 #Mazda3 is getting rid of its previous “i” and “s” suffixes in favor of simple names.
The base Mazda3 is the Sport model, which comes with a powerful 155-hp 2.0-liter engine and the exact same price as last year. For the sport model there are a couple of available upgrades: hatchback and Preferred Equipment. Hatchback morphs the car into a hatchback as expected, and the Preferred Equipment option adds larger wheels, blind spot monitoring, upgraded seats and a chrome trim.
The next Mazda3 trim is the Touring level, which features improved wheels, Smart City Brake Support and automatic climate control. This level also has a hatchback option, as well as the Popular Equipment package, which installs a sunroof, rear spoiler and a fancy Bose audio system. The hatchback version can be upgraded even more, though, to the Touring 2.5 hatchback, named so for its roaring 2.5 liter 184-hp engine.
The most luxurious trim is the Grand Touring level, sporting LED fog lights and quality leather seats. The hatchback option is again available for purchase, as well as a Premium Equipment package and i-ACTIVESENSE package. The Premium Equipment includes LED head and taillights and an improved navigation system, while the ACTIVESENSE package brings greater safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning software.
