This is how development of the legendary rotary engine had started. When much bigger and more esteemed carmakers were failing miserably to untie the knots of the rotary engine puzzle, Mazda came forward even with its relative inexperience to provide a practical solution in the form of an engine with enough power and compact size. Mazda had tried before and failed a number of times but didn’t give up on its dream of finding a solution to the problem of rotary engines. Finally in the year 1967, lady luck smiled on the set of Mazda engineers working tirelessly on the project and they produced the first rotary engine powered commercial sports car- the iconic Cosmo which won many hearts, made this group of engineers legends and established Mazda as a serious player on the global map of auto manufacturers.

Mazda once again stirred up the sporting world with its coveted “triple crown” title win in the 24 hours of Le Mans race in 1991 with a rotary engine powered car. After its disastrous debut in 1973 and many defeats in the interim period, no one had thought Mazda to be capable of winning the intense endurance testing race. But again perseverance paid off and to date, it is the only Asian automaker with such a distinction.
