Supplemental Restraint System Airbags are Standard in All Mazda Cars

Mazda has always prioritized one aspect of driving over everything else- that is the safety of the passengers in its cars. Despite its impressive array of technologies that can easily rival any in the world, it has never lost sight of its duties towards its passengers. Most of the cars in the world including Mazda cars offer technological packages which include such features as forward collision mitigation, blind spot detection, intuitive emergency brakes, lane keeping assist, lane changing warning system and rear crossing traffic. Some high end cars offer these features as standard too.

Although these technologies have reduced the chances of collision and impact, it still remains one of the biggest hazards of driving. As a result, airbags are being improved and upgraded with the latest technologies. Airbags were not present in cars till 1970s. In the 1980s, a handful of manufacturers realized the importance of airbags in mitigating the impact of a crash or a collision although it was not standard.

Only at the start of the new millennium did car manufacturers and safety regulatory authorities understand the importance of airbags and they became standard. Initially, some cars were offering airbags as a replacement for seat-belts. Now, it is has been proven that an airbag can extenuate an impact properly if it is working in conjunction with a properly fitted seat belt. Hence the name- supplemental restraint system was introduced.

The frontal airbag for the driver is deployed from the steering wheel and that of the front passenger comes out from the dashboard. It is deployed if a frontal impact is sensed and tries to provide cushion to the head and chest of the front passenger and driver.

There is still not enough protection available for side impact collisions. So, SRS side impact airbags are extremely important. Mazda provides curtain and front side airbags to lessen side impact. The SRS curtain airbag is deployed from the ceiling of the car if the car computer detects a severe or moderate side crash and tries to cover the side window so as to protect impact to the head. The front side impact SRS airbag tries to protect the chest. It is usually launched from the side of the driver or front passenger seat.

One important point is that an SRS airbag works effectively only if you are wearing your seat belt properly. So, don’t drive or ride without your seat-belt. Have a safe ride!
