With all the focus on electric and self-driving vehicles, you many have gotten the impression that diesel engines were quickly becoming a thing of the past. This could not be farther from the truth, however, as 2016 has been dominated by trucks and crossovers, many of which have impressive diesel engines. These engines have come a long way from the loud and dirty ones of the past, and nowadays can have several advantages over traditional petrol engines. Recently, Mazda announced a diesel engine that will be available on the 2018 CX-5.

While it may seem early to be thinking about a 2018 model, preparing for the future and making its plans apparent to consumers have always been important for Mazda. The diesel #CX5 will be one of the smallest crossovers to have this option, and the added power will be put to good use, thanks to the lighter frame and base. Mazda’s 2017 changes to the CX-5 include the option of more luxury features and a few edits to the bold look, and the 2018 prototype continues to build on these changes.

So why make the transition to diesel? There are a few advantages that have been introduced in the past couple of years that make them more affordable and better suited for smaller cars. The most important benefit is the reduced risk of damage and the lower maintenance costs, which is a result of having fewer parts and the total lack of a spark plug. Additionally, the fuel cost per kilowatt produced is generally around a third lower than that of a gas engine, so consider diesel a great alternative to petrol next time you go car shopping.
