Reports Indicate That Mazda Has Filed U.S. Patents Pointing Towards Future Production Of Electric Vehicles

According to Autoblog, Mazda has filed two new patents in the United States related to a small rotary engine. This is exciting news, as it indicates that Mazda has plans for an electric car in the near future.  There is certainly a surge in interest from automakers to join the growing trend of going green.  However, designing electric cars is just one step along the road.  The U.S. in particular, needs to be more aggressive at pursuing infrastructure that will accommodate electric cars.

Patents Reveal Possible Prototype Plans

The first patent filed by Mazda appears to be for a motor that will power a small generator and act as a range extender.  Its presumed use would be for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.  The second patent is more involved and has been identified as a start-stop system.  This would be ideal for a rotary engine.  A two-pronged approach, the purpose of such a start-stop system is to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

Electric Vehicle Versus Rotary Sports Car

For those who still yearn for Mazda to release another rotary sports car, such as the R8, it is more realistic to assume that Mazda has set its sights on the electric vehicles of the future.  Although there is no timetable for this to happen, it seems plausible that by 2020 Mazda could be ready for production of a new electric vehicle.
