Mazda Once Considered Building an Electric Miata

At one point in history, Mazda was considering building an electric Miata prototype. In 1991, Mazda built their first electric roadster – the electric Miata stayed in prototype stage permanently and never made it to production. The EV Miata had 16 batteries under the hood that sent power to a 30 kW motor, which translate to about 40 horsepower. As far as the transmission, the electric roadster featured a five speed transmission which gave it the zoom-zoom feeling all Mazda enthusiasts are well aware of. Although Mazda has not hinted at bringing the model back, we can imagine that an idea like this is not far fetch with the current trend of environmentally friendly vehicles. Mazda Mexico Reaches Another Milestone

Mazda’s facility in Mexico has recently celebrated a tremendous milestone this month. The assembly plant is less than a year old and has already produced its 100,000th vehicle. The honored unit was a Mazda2 hatchback headed for Europe. The Mexican facility is one of three plants assembling the compact model and the Mazda3 for American and European markets. Mazda announced that it is expanding production at Mazda Mexico Vehicle Operations by 150% of this year’s capacity to 250,000 units per year by March 2016. Mazda CX-3 Expected to Outperform Segment Competition

The latest addition to the Mazda model lineup was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and is expected to do extremely well in a heavily populated vehicle segment. The CX-3 model sits just below the CX-5 in the Japanese automaker’s model lineup and will directly compete against competitors’ compact SUVs like the Nissan Juke, Ford EcoSport and Subaru XV Crosstrek. The Mazda CX-3 features Mazda’s KODO design language styling and is equipped with a range of SKYACTIV engines, including the company’s new 1.5-liter diesel, which has been designed to minimize losses to friction. Additionally, Mazda will equip the new compact SUV with “Mazda Connect,” SYNC AppLink system and Mazda’s i-Activesense safety package, which includes an adaptive front-lighting system, radar cruise control, rear vehicle monitoring and lane departure and forward obstruction warning systems. Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) announced the addition of Jade Gurss to its PR team. Gurss will overlook all communications related to the Mazda SKYACTIV Prototype program competing in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. John Doonan, Director of Motorsports MNAO, said: “We’re happy to announce the addition of Jade Gurss to the Mazda Motorsports team. This will be value-added for our media contacts as Jade will be 100% focused on our SKYACTIV Prototype program, allowing Dean Case to work much closer with our partners at the Mazda Road to Indy, Mazda MX-5 Cup, and on our grassroots programs.
