A driving professor from AAA, Eric Smith, described winter driving in a practical way, “If you’re not being safe, and you’re driving aggressively, and do not get to your destination, it’s going to cost you a lot of money.” AAA receives over double the amount of calls as usual during this dangerous season, so heed his words of wisdom. It’s important to always be conscientious of the road conditions and change your speed accordingly based on traffic, visibility and traction.
Before you head out onto the winter roads, put a quarter into your tread depth and see whether Washington’s head is facing down. If part is visible, then you consider getting your treads replaced, as they are likely low and worn down. In the event you start to lose control of the car, the biggest piece of advice you can follow is not to panic. Remain calm and collected, lightly let off the accelerator, and try to take control of the steering wheel. Then you can gradually slow down by using the brakes. Above all, try to take things a bit slower during the holidays—it’s better to arrive late rather than get stuck off on the side of the road.
