The handbrake, also known as a parking brake, needs applied under a variety of different scenarios. Below are some of the most common situations where it may need to be utilized:
Parking on a slope –
To ensure the vehicle does not roll and to keep the vehicle securely as you intend to leave it, apply the parking brake when the vehicle is parked on a hill or slope
General Driving –
Ensure that pulling the parking brake does not become a reactionary practice. In times when a quick stop is necessary, it may be desirable to grab the parking brake, doing this is not recommended for the overall well-being of your vehicle or safety however.
Maneuvers –
There isn’t a strict rule of thumb for maneuvers when it comes to the parking brake but many enthusiasts enjoy using the parking brake as a part of their performance experience when driving a vehicle.
Emergency stop –
Should the traditional brakes in your vehicle fail or not be adequate for whatever reason, using the hand brake may be a necessary, though not recommended method of bringing the vehicle to a stop.
Hill starts –
While driving on Hills and slopes it is always suggested to opt for a handbrake first when in a manual which eliminates a clutch biting point ensuring no rolling.
