For starters, it can wear out your fuel pump which means replacing it.  That’s because the emptier your tank is, the more air can enter the fuel pump and expose it to premature wear. It’s not just the fuel pump you need to worry about either.  The other consequence of allowing fuel to dip below the one-quarter mark is that the dirt that settles at the bottom of your vehicle’s tank is more likely to be transferred to the fuel line and through the engine.
