When Should You Use a Handbrake

shutterstock_189400295

The handbrake, also known as a parking brake, needs applied under a variety of different scenarios. Below are some of the most common situations where it may need to be utilized:

Parking on a slope –

To ensure the vehicle does not roll and to keep the vehicle securely as you intend to leave it, apply the parking brake when the vehicle is parked on a hill or slope

General Driving –

Ensure that pulling the parking brake does not become a reactionary practice. In times when a quick stop is necessary, it may be desirable to grab the parking brake, doing this is not recommended for the overall well-being of your vehicle or safety however.

Maneuvers –

There isn’t a strict rule of thumb for maneuvers when it comes to the parking brake but many enthusiasts enjoy using the parking brake as a part of their performance experience when driving a vehicle.

Emergency stop –

Should the traditional brakes in your vehicle fail or not be adequate for whatever reason, using the hand brake may be a necessary, though not recommended method of bringing the vehicle to a stop.

Hill starts –

While driving on Hills and slopes it is always suggested to opt for a handbrake first when in a manual which eliminates a clutch biting point ensuring no rolling.

To learn more tips on how to use a handbrake, as well as the performance variants of our Mazda vehicles, visit Cardinale Mazda.

Traveling With a Dog in a Car

Dog sticking head out of car

Traveling is always fun and exciting but if you are a pet lover you know that at times, traveling with your dog can be a challenge. Different states have various rules regarding the safe travel with pets and it is always best to know which apply to your state before hitting the open road. Below we have put together some helpful tips to ensure that you and your furry friend stay safe when hitting the open road.

Some important law / laws –

  • A fine ranging from $250 – $1000 can occur if for example if the police see the pet traveling in an inappropriate manner.
  • Driving with a dog is fine, but on your lap is not fine! Hawaii law seriously condemns it.
  • Never leave any pet in the car unattended.
  • There are few rules under the category of distracted driving violations and if the pet is the reason for any crashes it is covered under above law.

Laws protect to the best possible way be it a human or a pet. But, it is the individual’s responsibility as well to be associated to protect the pet in all aspects. Few of them are –

Crates –

Usage of crates which are crash-tested, durable and liable to all quality testing guide lines as well as dog safety assurance is suggestible. This can help your dog’s exposure to air, safety and protected drives.

Break –

Driving is fun but with a break at regular intervals. While traveling with a dog, the rules change, because unlike humans dogs cannot give a consistent behavior at all times on a long drive. So, it is better to take a break at every 3 – 4 hours and give the dog some fresh air to breathe and stretch.

Power windows – Turn it off!

The disadvantage of power windows while traveling with dogs is that they can easily open it with / without knowledge by the touch of their paw. So, it is always good to turn it off. Also, not all dogs are calm and subtle; some energetic dogs can jump from a running car or get choked between the windows.

Water and bowl –

As humans we can control some requirements while on drive but it is not the same situation with dogs. Don’t wait till you reach the next supermarket for a water bottle and food for your dog. It is a better choice to carry bottle of water and the regular food that your doggy needs.

The SKYACTIV Platform Also Includes the Chassis

19

Mazda’s SKYACTIV platform is aimed to ensure a better interaction between the car and driver. Improving comfort and security features, the SKYACTIV chassis provides a smooth yet powerful driving experience.

The chassis features redesigned front and rear suspensions. It increases the yaw gain (the force that turns a vehicle) at low/mid speeds and reduces it at high-speeds. This provides greater stability at higher speeds.

By increasing the front suspension caster angle and caster trail, self-aligning torque is enhanced to provide a firm steering handle at high speeds. Electric power steering controls make the steering lighter at low/mid speeds by increasing power assistance.

To balance agility and comfort, the entire suspension has been redesigned to improved handling. Shifting the rear suspension trailing link attachment upwards and allowing a greater lever ratio of the mounts helps absorb longitudinal impact shocks from the road and provides a comfortable ride. Increased stability due to this design also reduces stopping distance.

Packaging these advanced features into a light, rigid body is the cherry on top of the cake. To create a lightweight frame, the longitudinal offset of the lower arm attachment position in the front are reduced while the center car section is extended. The longitudinal span of the cross member is extended, welding flanges are removed, and the longitudinal offset of the lateral link attachment position is reduced in the rear. All these help reduce the weight of the car by 14%.

Thus, the superiority of the SKYACTIV Chassis lies in its balance between conflicting needs such as agility and stability, light weight and rigidity, and thrill and comfort.

The Mazda i-ELOOP, Regenerative Braking To the Next Level

DFDF

Imagine a car where every drop of fuel is put to use ensuring no wasting of energy. Mazda’s i-ELOOP, part of the SkyActiv technology package, is used to convert the car’s kinetic energy into electricity. This intelligent energy loop improves fuel economy and engine efficiency.

Vehicle accessories such as headlights, audio system, GPS, and other electrical components are powered using extra batteries that store and supply energy. This puts a load on the engine to burn extra fuel just to power these accessories. Also, the best opportunity to do this would be during braking or decelerating. But the time span of deceleration or braking is quite small.

To overcome these hurdles, the i-ELOOP uses low-resistance, high-capacity electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) and a variable voltage alternator. The alternator provides an output voltage between 12V and 25V, allowing the capacitor to store and discharge a large amount of electricity. The electrodes in a capacitor last long with little deterioration from regular use. Activated carbon is the primary component of the capacitor which is eco-friendly.

The Mazda Connect Display on the dashboard displays the efficiency and charge level of the capacitor system. This will allow you to view and track the flow of energy in real-time. The working of this system is quite simple. When decelerating, the alternator generates electricity and transfers it to the capacitor. During acceleration, the stored electricity supplies power to the car’s electrical components.

The i-ELOOP system reduces a burden on the engine to burn extra fuel for electricity. Less wastage of energy leads to better fuel economy. The use of capacitors also increases the life span of the vehicles lead-acid battery.

Mazda Is Bringing Back Their Performance Series

Mazda 1

The R&D department at Mazda has indicated the revival of the company’s MPS (Mazda Performance Series) badge. Ever since the RX-8 went out of production, the idea of bringing back the MPS line with its rotary power plant has been active. Mazda Australia also has continuously reiterated the lack of an out-and-out sports car that fits into a motorsport category.

Mazda6 was the first car to carry the MPS badge way back in 2005. In 2006, it was the Mazda3. Both cars included a 190kW/380Nm 2.3-litre inline four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine. The MPS line was discontinued, however, following the 2013 model year.

The announcement comes in light of advanced technologies such as SkyActiv that have been invested in by the brand. Innovative exhaust systems, 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo engines, more torque, and improved transmissions of the SkyActiv technology can be applied to the MPS. Thus, future MPS models may be equipped with more power and upgraded parts.

The chief engineer of the Mazda2 hinted at the prospect of building an MPS model and that they’re always investigating these possibilities. Mazda’s head of global public relations, Kudo Hidetoshi also implied giving the MPS tag to the new MX-5. But none of these plans have been confirmed.

Cars with the new Mazda Performance Series (MPS) badge may include the Mazda2 Supermini, Mazda3, and Mazda6. They will rival contemporaries such as the Volkswagen’s Golf R and Ford Focus ST. The revival of the MPS line will get Mazda back into the motorsport arena and make it a key player in the rotary sports flagship.

To test drive one of Mazda’s already performance oriented vehicles, come visit us at Cardinale Mazda today.
