Closer Look Under the 2016 Mazda Miata Hood Mazda has purposefully kept details of the next MX-5 Miata secret – the Japanese automaker has not officially popped the hood just yet. Luckily for us, we were able to catch a glimpse of the Miata’s engine. At this year’s New York Auto Show, Mazda unveiled a few features and we learned that like the NC Mazda MX-5, the battery is up front, near the front fascia; the engine on the other hand, is pushed way back with the airbox up front, and the coil-on-plugs are very prominent up top. It is believed that there are two engine options for the new generation Mazda Miata; the 2.0 liter SKYACTIV-G, which can produce 155 HP and the 2.5-liter SKYACTIV-G, which can produce 184 HP and 185 lb-ft of torque.
