This year marks the second year in a decade that the Mazda MX-5 was named Japan’s Car of the Year. Even within the last four years Mazda vehicles have been crowned with this title. The CX-5 was honored in 2012 and the Mazda2 was named the best last year. The award began in 1980 and since then, Mazda has won six times. The Mazda MX-5 was given the title in 2015 because it was the best redesigned vehicle that was released in Japan between November 1, 2015 and October 31, 2015. The MX-5 was able to showcase its superiority over some fierce competition. The vehicle is features the KODO design language, SYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, a perfectly balanced 50-50 weight distribution, and an engine that is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, delivering 155 horsepower. Mazda 2 Mazda Dealers and Employees Race in Mazda MX-5 Cup Race Car

In 2013, Mazda North American Operations gathered Mazda employees and Mazda dealers to compete in the longest endurance race in America. Coming into this year’s race, the score was tied and a select number of dealers and employees were ready to compete in the National Auto Sports Association’s 25 Hours of Thunderhill. This time the 15 drivers were able to compete behind the wheel of the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup race car. It is a way for the drivers to experience what the race car is all about, as well as a way for Mazda to test its durability. The MX-5 Cup series comprises of 45-minute sprint races, equaling to two full seasons worth of competition for each car. The employees and dealers will be racing alongside four 2016 Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup spec cars being driven by Long Road Racing. Cardinale Mazda sees this as a great way for friendly competition between Mazda employees and dealers.

Britain-based tuning company, BBR, has created new performance packages for the Mazda MX-5. With a new cold air intake, sport exhaust system, and ECU upgrades, the 2.0-liter engine under the hood of the MX-5 now delivers 190 brake horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque with the Super 190’ package. Other upgrades include a 1-inch suspension lowering kit and high-performance brake pads. If a buyer does not want to spend as much money on the ‘Super 190’ package, they can opt for the ‘Super 175+’ package. This increases the output of the 2.0-liter engine to 177 brake horsepower. If you a buyer has the 1.5-liter engine instead, they can purchase the ‘Super 160’ package to increase the power of the Mazda MX-5 to 158 brake horsepower. Roadkill is a video series that has rapidly grown into an internet sensation for car enthusiasts and gearheads. The latest episode had Cardinale Mazda very excited as the Roadkill boys, David Freiburger and Mike Finnegan, get behind the wheel of a 1974 Mazda REPU mini-truck. The previous owner did some Frankenstein-like modifications to this Mazda REPU. Instead of under the hood, the 1974 Mazda REPU has an Oldsmobile V-8 engine installed within the bed of the mini-truck. The REPU has also been transformed into a front-wheel-drive beast via an Oldsmobile Toronado axle. With some tinkering, the boys were ready to take on the Optima Street Car Challenge. Mazda Considering Hydrogen Fuel Cell

Mazda CEO recently revealed that the automaker is planning on exploring its other engine options, including the latest rotary engine and a future hydrogen fuel cell. The Japanese automaker’s Chief Executive, spoke about Mazda’s future at the Los Angeles Auto Show, saying: “For the Japanese market, we have produced an electric vehicle. For hybrid systems, we have a license from Toyota and are continuing research in that area. We also are looking at our rotary-engine technology. It can combust hydrogen and use it as a fuel. The engine can run as a dual fuel system, switching between hydrogen and gasoline.” The automaker is looking into a number of other engine options and is expected to adopt a variety of engine options within its lineup in the upcoming years.

Mazda’s RX-Vision concept was recently unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show – the new concept stole the show in Tokyo and is one of the most anticipated and talked about reveals. Mazda CEO, Masamichi Kogai, was commented on the release, saying: “The only engine we can think of in that car is a rotary engine.” The RX-Vision’s low slung design implies that the other engine configuration would work. Mazda has been committed to success in innovation since before 1931 – with a 3-wheeled truck known as the Mazda-go DA. In the 1960s Mazda had to consolidate automotive manufacturing – the industry’s thinking was that rather than being a full-line company, each manufacturer would focus on a different vehicle segment rather than being a full-line company. Mazda saw this as an opportunity to differentiate itself from the other Japanese automakers, and focus only on developing and enhancing the rotary engine technology. A few years later, Mazda introduced the first twin-rotary engine in the 1967 Cosmo Sport.
